Artist
Sharon Schmiedel is an artist based in Connecticut and has a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She works in acrylics, collage, watercolor, oils, and pen and ink. These works are energetic and expressive; it is the opposite direction from the many years she spent working in technical illustration, medical illustration, and graphic design. She now spends her creative energy painting, drawing, and teaching.

Artist's Statement
Over the past 10 years my art practice has become a central part of my life. Art making brings me into balance and with that the beginnings of equanimity. It is spirituality without the rules and religion, and at times takes me to a higher place, making me a better human. Making art I am often fearless, embracing uncertainty.
In my narrative work, drawing from the model is important to my practice. I strive to quickly capture the figure’s gesture and humanity with a simple line. Pattern, color, transparency, text, are all elements I play with both at the session and later in the studio. Landing the figure in pre-existing environments as opposed to a blank page starts a dialogue and leads to discovering how to integrate the two. Here stories unfold intuitively, giving the figures both dignity and humor as we venture into their world.
The abstractions are very new and I am finding my way with them. This means it will be several weeks before I can process this enough to be able write about it. Will update here in the near future.
